Lamb's Quarter (Chenopodium album) also known as: Lamb's-quarters, Common Lamb's-quarters, Lambsquarter, Goosefoot, White Goosefoot, Fat-hen, Pigweed, etc. Division - Magnoliaphyta Class - Magnoliopsida Subclass - Caryophyllidae Order - Caryophyllales Family - Amaranthaceae Genus - Chenopodium Although known to some as pigweed, it needs to be differentiated from common pigweed (Amaranthus retroflexus). This is an incredible weed. They say that it was the first weed to pop up in London bombing sites after WWII. I can believe it. The stuff grows like crazy, fast and invasive. Luckily, it is edible and quite tasty. It is related to spinach and is high in vitamins. It used to be eaten as a staple crop. It was a major food-source for me a few summers, as I ate my way through weeding my garden plot. The tips and new growth are the best. Be careful where you pick it, though, as it can soak up the bad elements of fertilizers and such. Taxonomic List List by Scientific Name List by Common Name |
