This is one ugly plant. A hybrid of this species, Rumex confusus, is easily mistaken for it, but Rumex confusus grows much taller and can be differentiated by the fruit, which only bears one seed bulge in the papery wings, while Rumex crispus has one in each of the three angles, as can be clearly seen in the photo below.
